International Day of Novruz marked in Geneva
Baku, March 31 (AZERTAC). The permanent representations of Azerbaijan, Afghanistan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kirgizstan, Tajikistan and Turkey have organized an event dedicated to Novruz in Switzerland. The event titled International Day of Novruz took place at the United Nations regional headquarters in Geneva on March 30.
The celebration was organized in accordance with the International Day of Novruz resolution, which was adopted at the 64th session of the United Nations General Assembly at the suggestion of Azerbaijan`s representation at the UN.
Addressing the event, Head of the United Nations office at Geneva Sergey Orjonikidze highly valued the decision to mark the International Day of Novruz, adding that it is an integral part of the world cultural heritage.
The permanent representative office of Azerbaijan prepared an exposition of the Azerbaijan national Novruz sweets. The participants were charmed watching the photo exposition and video materials related to the Azerbaijan culture and art.
Widely marked in Azerbaijan as the Holiday of Spring, Novruz was also celebrated for centuries by diverse nations spread from the Middle East and Anatolia to Central Asia. In September 2009, the UN`s cultural agency, UNESCO, included Novruz in the list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
