World Press Photo launches multimedia contest
Baku, February 28 (AZERTAC). World Press Photo is pleased to announce its first contest for multimedia productions in visual journalism. The contest is divided into two sections, for linear and for interactive multimedia. The winners will be announced during the Awards Days at the beginning of May 2011.
World Press Photo has held an annual press photography contest since 1955. While photography continues to play a significant role in global media, the organization recognizes the increasing importance of photography products in the market, and is aware of a broadening in demand beyond the still image in printed media. World Press Photo is hoping to provide impetus to photojournalistic multimedia by recognizing productions of exceptional quality.
Managing director Michiel Munneke: "With this in mind, and as part of our mission to encourage high professional standards in photojournalism and to support professional press photography in all its aspects, World Press Photo has decided to initiate a contest for multimedia productions. The 2011 multimedia contest is set up separately from the annual press photography contest. Judging multimedia productions is a new venture for the organization, and in the first contest we will test definitions and procedures with the aim of refining them for future editions."
In order to identify the best multimedia globally, Word Press Photo is putting its trust in the expertise of specialists in the field, to nominate multimedia productions of the highest quality. The nominating committee members will nominate productions for the two categories of multimedia production: online or offline linear productions, or online interactive productions, with a journalistic storyline.
Productions may include (but are not limited to) such audio and visual elements as photography, video, animation, graphics, illustrations, sound and text. Professional photography should play a significant role in telling the visual story. The nominated work will be judged on their impact and editing, as well as their originality and innovative execution.
Judging will take place at the World Press Photo office in Amsterdam from 18-21 March 2011. The jury for the 2011 multimedia contest consists of five highly respected professionals in the field of multimedia.
The jury will shortlist three productions per category. First, second and third prizes in each category will be announced during the World Press Photo Awards Days, from 6-7 May 2011. First prizes will be awarded a cash award of €5,000.
World Press Photo receives support from the Dutch Postcode Lottery and is sponsored worldwide by Canon and TNT.
