AZERBAIJAN ONE OF SECURE AND STABLE COUNTRIES IN COMPARISON WITH THE DEVELOPED EUROPEAN STATES FOR CRIME RATE
An expanded meeting devoted to results of work in the field of combat against criminality, ensuring public order and safety and forthcoming tasks, took place at the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Republic, 27 Jan.
Prior to meeting, a news conference was held for the media representatives. Answering questions of journalists, Minister of Internal Affairs, colonel-general Ramil Usubov has told: “We have completed the last year with good parameters. 2006 was rich with significant events and has been marked by dynamical development of Azerbaijan, intensive growth of economy, realization of projects of international value, successful realization of the projects of global importance”.
Creation of the infrastructures serving to well-being of people, to the further increase of economic power, opening of the industrial enterprises, carried out democratic reforms, ensuring the rights and freedom of the person, reliable protection of public order have considerably raised the international image of the country, the Minister noted. He spoke of special contribution to these achievements, made by the law-enforcement bodies which have ended 2006 with good results in the field of combat against criminality in the country, ensuring public order and stability.
Then, the Interior Minister made a detailed report, noting: “According to results of the last year, Azerbaijan is one of the secure and stable countries not only in the CIS, but also in comparison with the developed European states, for crime rate”.
In the period under review, registered were 19045 crimes, including 18267 on line of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. The number of some heavy kind of crimes, including the facts of deliberate murder and attempt at it, robbery, rape, kidnapping, room thefts, hijacking of motor transport has reduced and the crimes connected to kidnapping were not registered.
Police solved the majority of personal crimes (97.3%) and all the crimes connected with the gangsterism and trafficking in humans. Over 90 percent of crimes committed in Azerbaijan as well as 435 unsolved ones were detected last year.
Minister said 268 gangs and groups consisted of 772 criminals were apprehended.
Fuad Alasgarov, chief of the Presidential Administration’s department for working with law-enforcement bodies positively assessed the activity of interior bodies in 2006.
Summing up the meeting, Minister noted that there are also were shortcomings, and gave instructions and recommendations to eliminate them.
R. Usubov assured President of Azerbaijan, Supreme Commander-in-chief Ilham Aliyev that Azerbaijan police and interior troops will make every effort to ensure security, peace and public order in the country for the successful continuation of the policy of state building, economic progress and large-scale reforms initiated by national leader Heydar Aliyev.
