Nowruz has already become a universal holiday, UNESCO Assistant Director-General
Paris, March 21 (AZERTAC). UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Culture Francesco Bandarin has said Nowruz has already become a universal holiday.
He spoke at a celebration of the International Nowruz Day at the UNESCO headquarters, organized by several countries that share the holiday, including Azerbaijan, Afghanistan, Iran, Turkey, India, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Pakistan.
Bandarin said the International Nowruz Day was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2010 at the initiative of Azerbaijan.
Iranian Permanent Ambassador to UNESCO Mohammad Reza Majidi highlighted history and traditions of Nowruz.
The event featured a concert of musicians from the organizer countries, including a mugham trio from Azerbaijan.
The celebration was attended by French public figures, UNESCO officials, representatives of the diplomatic corps in the organization, as well as journalists.
Azerbaijan`s display corner at the event included “Mehriban Aliyeva`s mugham project” book, Baku and Irs magazines, as well as brochures on the country`s tourism potential.
In his interview with AZERTAC`s Paris-based correspondent, Ambassador of Kazakhstan to UNESCO Olzhas Suleimenov congratulated the people of Azerbaijan on Nowruz holiday.
Inscribed in 2009 on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity as a cultural tradition observed by numerous peoples, Nowruz is an ancestral festivity marking the first day of spring and the renewal of nature. It promotes values of peace and solidarity between generations and within families as well as reconciliation and neighbourliness, thus contributing to cultural diversity and friendship among peoples and different communities.
