Brenda Shaffer: It's wonderful to see that Trump administration acknowledges importance of Azerbaijan
Washington, August 10, AZERTAC
“It’s wonderful to see that the Trump administration acknowledges the importance of Azerbaijan,” said international energy and foreign policy specialist Brenda Shaffer in an interview with AZERTAC.
Describing President Ilham Aliyev’s visit to Washington as historic, the U.S. expert noted: “The Trump administration likes strong regional players that can defend themselves and can be strong economic partners. Azerbaijan is a classic ally for the Trump administration in its approach to international politics. It is good to see that, in addition to the political meeting in the White House, a number of economic agreements have been signed. I think we’re going to see more trade and investments between the United States and Azerbaijan. The meeting itself actually reflects a big change.”
“Armenia was backed for years by Russia and Iran. Obviously, Russia is now a problematic ally for Armenia because it is sending coups and people to try to undermine Pashinyan. Iran, after the 12-day war, is extremely weak. I think Pashinyan believes that, with all the risks, peace with Türkiye and Azerbaijan is better for Armenia than relying solely on Iran or Russia. I think the next step for Armenia will be the opening of border and relations with Türkiye. This is probably the second stage of peace, and it will also be very good for Armenia,” she emphasized.
“This is a win-win situation for Armenia and Azerbaijan. But, of course, what made this possible was only thanks to the 2020 war and the September 2023 anti-terror operations. Azerbaijan’s sovereignty over its territories made this peace possible,” Brenda Shaffer added.
